Richard Primack is a Professor of Biology at Boston University and Affiliated Faculty with the Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS). His research focuses on plant ecology, conservation biology, climate change impacts, citizen science, and tropical rainforests. He holds a PhD in Botany from Duke University and a BA from Harvard University.
Primack has conducted fieldwork globally, including in Malaysia, New Zealand, Japan, and Central America. He previously served as Editor-in-Chief of Biological Conservation and authored influential textbooks like Essentials of Conservation Biology. His work extends to public engagement through books like Walden Warming, which explores climate change impacts using Henry David Thoreau's observations.
He has received prestigious awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship and Humboldt Research Award. His research group investigates climate-driven changes in Massachusetts plant and bird populations, continuing Thoreau's legacy. Primack advocates for inclusive scientific communities and leverages historical data, herbarium specimens, and citizen science to study ecological shifts.
