Dr. Richard Primack is a Full Professor at Boston University, holding positions since 1978. He has been a visiting professor at institutions including the University of Tokyo, Charles University (Czech Republic), and the University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on climate change impacts on ecological systems, conservation biology, and phenology, utilizing historical data and museum specimens. He pioneered techniques for monitoring plant and animal responses to climate change through networks of botanical gardens.
Primack authored four conservation biology textbooks translated into over 20 languages, with a free African edition downloaded 50,000+ times. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Biological Conservation (2009-2016), managing 17,000 manuscripts and organizing 15 special issues. His honors include the George Mercer Award (2022), Guggenheim Fellowship (2006-2007), and Humboldt Research Award (2014-2016).
Primack’s work bridges academic research and global conservation efforts, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration. His labs developed novel methods for phenological monitoring, now adopted worldwide. Current projects include tracking leaf-out and fruiting patterns in temperate and tropical species across international botanical gardens.
