Amanda Gallinat is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at Colby College, focusing on ecology and environmental science. Her research integrates natural history, community interactions, and global environmental change, with an emphasis on phenology—the timing of seasonal biological events. She uses field observations, historical records, and citizen science data to study climate change impacts on plant and bird phenology.
Her teaching includes courses such as Ecology (BI271), Applied Ecology (ES270), and Phenology: Ecology of the Seasons (ES335). She emphasizes hands-on learning and the application of ecological principles to real-world challenges.
Research interests span climate change effects on phenology, plant-animal interactions, and the use of historical datasets (e.g., Henry David Thoreau's records) in ecological studies. Her work highlights the importance of phenological shifts in understanding species adaptation and conservation.
Key articles explore macrophenology patterns, invasive species' roles in bird-plant interactions under climate change, and the ethical implications of conservation practices during crises like the pandemic. Her methodologies often combine herbarium specimens, citizen science, and advanced ecological modeling.
Amanda's research bridges ecological theory and applied conservation, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to address global environmental challenges.
