Richard E. Petty is a Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences. He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia and his Ph.D. from Ohio State. His career includes roles as Chair of the Department of Psychology and President of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.
His research focuses on the Elaboration Likelihood Model of persuasion, examining how situational and individual factors influence beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. Key areas include prejudice, consumer behavior, political decisions, and health behaviors. He emphasizes meta-cognitive and implicit processes, racial stereotypes, and the correction of biased judgments.
Petty has authored 9 books and over 450 journal articles. Notable awards include the 2024 APA Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award and the 2018 Attitudes and Social Influence Group Award.
