Richard Nunes is an Associate Professor of Planning and Sustainability and Undergraduate Programme Area Director in Real Estate and Planning at the University of Reading's Henley Business School. His research focuses on integrating urban ecosystem services into development planning, examining human-environment interactions, and the interplay between knowledge and policy development. He holds a PhD from University College London (2011), a Master's in Regional Planning from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (2003), and a Bachelor's in Architecture from Cornell University (1996).
His expertise spans environmental design, sustainability transitions, and urban bioregionalism. Recent research includes studies on climate change impacts on housing design, pandemic-era food systems, and post-pandemic workplace ecosystems. He has advised numerous PhD students, including Tajudeen Olawale Azeez (climate change and housing in Nigeria) and Adele Wylie (gendered food work during the pandemic).
Dr. Nunes has collaborated with institutions like the School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Sciences and the School of Biological Sciences. His work frequently addresses institutional bricolage, community-based resource management, and policy innovation. He has secured funding from the Research Excellence Programme (REP), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES).
His publications explore topics such as undesirable resilience in social-ecological systems, transformation archetypes in global food systems, and the right to clean air for children in urban spaces. He maintains active roles in interdisciplinary projects and policy development, emphasizing pragmatic approaches to sustainability challenges.
