Richard M. O’Brien is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. His laboratory focuses on understanding the metabolic functions and transcriptional regulation of the glucose-6-phosphatase gene family, with particular emphasis on their roles in diabetes and associated diseases. The lab investigates genes G6PC, G6PC2, and G6PC3, which are linked to conditions like glycogen storage disease type 1a, type 2 diabetes, and neutropenia.
Research emphasizes the correlation between fasting blood glucose levels and cardiovascular mortality risk, leveraging molecular and genetic approaches. The O’Brien Lab is actively involved in departmental activities, including annual relays and graduate student mentorship.
