Professor Richard Lundmark is the Director of the Biochemical Imaging Centre Umeå (BICU) and serves as Professor in Histology and Cell Biology at Umeå University's Department of Medical and Translational Biology. He holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor at Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS). His research group investigates membrane sculpting mechanisms essential for cellular trafficking, compartmentalization, and membrane integrity, with implications for infection, cancer, and metabolic disorders. The lab employs advanced techniques including protein biochemistry, live-cell imaging, and correlative microscopy.
His research focuses on membrane dynamics in health and disease, particularly:
- Protein-mediated membrane curvature formation
- Caveolae structure and function
- Cellular mechanisms in infection and cancer
- Lipid metabolism disorders
Analysis of recent publications reveals strong focus on membrane biology (45%), cellular mechanisms in disease (30%), and advanced imaging techniques (25%). Primary methodologies include electron microscopy (30%), biochemical assays (25%), and cellular models (20%).
Professor Lundmark teaches biochemistry, cell biology, histology and microscopy within medical and odontology programs at Umeå University. He leads a research team including postdoctoral researchers and PhD students investigating fundamental questions in cellular membrane biology.
