Richard Latham

Richard Latham serves as a Principal Lecturer in the Department of Engineering & Construction at the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, University of East London (UEL). With over 25 years of teaching experience, he leads the BSc (Hons) Surveying and Mapping Sciences programme and holds the School Quality Leader position responsible for university-wide quality assurance procedures since 2016.

His research centers on Land Surveying and Geo-Spatial Engineering, specializing in 3D Data Acquisition techniques including Terrestrial Survey, Laser Scanning, and Photogrammetry. He investigates point cloud modeling, terrain representation, and applications of CAD, GIS, and BIM systems for survey data processing and visualization.

Publication analysis reveals two distinct research phases: early glaciological field studies in European mountain ranges (1994) examining climate impacts on glaciers, followed by educational innovation in surveying technology (2008-2009) focusing on laser scanning curriculum integration and virtual learning environments.

As UEL's programme leader since 1994, he maintains one of only two UK undergraduate Land Surveying degrees and the sole southern provider. His quality assurance leadership involves validation panels and academic review processes, while teaching responsibilities include dissertation supervision and core modules in GIS, surveying technology, and 3D modeling.
