Richard L Bello is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. He holds a PhD and BA in Geography from McMaster University. His research focuses on northern environments, climate change impacts, peatland carbon dynamics, and urban environmental studies. He has conducted field research in the Hudson Bay Lowlands for three decades, studying greenhouse gas exchange, permafrost modification, and the influence of sea-ice changes on ecosystems. Recently, he expanded his research to include Eastern White Cedar forests on the Bruce Peninsula.
Teaching responsibilities include courses like Hydrometeorology, Ecological Climatology, and Physical Hydrology. His work leverages the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) model for climate analysis and collaborates with institutions like the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. He contributes to interdisciplinary projects including the Ontario Climate Data Portal, a user-friendly climate projection tool.
Research themes emphasize Arctic environments, surface energy balance analysis, and climate-driven ecological changes. He has presented at ArcticNet, CMOS-CGU-ESC Joint Conferences, and the Canadian Association of Geographers. His work bridges geoscience with applied environmental solutions, addressing climate change adaptation and sustainability challenges.
