Richard Karcher

Richard Karcher is a Professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Human Performance at Eastern Michigan University, appointed Faculty Athletics Representative in February 2022. A former professional baseball player with three seasons in the Atlanta Braves farm system, he transitioned to corporate law practice at Honigman LLP in Detroit before entering academia.

• B.A., University of Michigan-Dearborn, with High Distinction (1994)

Research Focus: His scholarship centers on labor and ethical dilemmas in athletics, exemplified by co-authoring a leading sport ethics textbook for management professionals. He frequently serves as a damages expert in athlete litigation and has provided Congressional testimony on sports-related legal matters.

Teaching Portfolio: Courses include Sport Governance and Regulation, Sport Ethics, NCAA Compliance, Introduction to Research in Sport Management, and International Sport.
