Richard Jolley

Richard Jolley is an Associate Professor at Staffordshire University's School of Health, Education, Policing and Sciences, specializing in developmental psychology. As a Chartered Psychologist and HEA Fellow, his research examines children's pictorial representation from developmental, cognitive, and cross-cultural perspectives.

Research spans emotional expression in drawings, cross-cultural comparisons (UK-China), drawing as memory aids, and artistic development in neurodiverse populations. Current projects include children's drawings of pandemic experiences and drawing-based memory techniques.

Publications demonstrate longitudinal focus on drawing development across cultures and educational settings. His book Children and Pictures: Drawing and Understanding has been translated into Greek and Chinese. Recent articles analyze creative intention sources and artist-picture relationship understanding.

Teaching includes child development modules, project supervision, and leading the psychology PhD program. External engagements include invited panels at Oxford University and consultancy for educational art programs.
