معرفی
Dr. Richard Jan van Arkel is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London's Faculty of Engineering. His research focuses on applying engineering science to advance orthopaedic interventions, with expertise spanning implantable sensors, surgical biomechanics, additive manufacturing, and preclinical testing methodologies.
Education:
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London (Thesis on biomechanics of ligaments/muscles in hip motion)
- Studied Engineering Design at the University of Bristol
Research Interests: Orthopaedic systems development, impact of surgery on joint biomechanics, implant functionality optimization, ultrasound applications in orthopaedics, and novel preclinical analysis techniques. His work bridges mechanical engineering principles with clinical applications in musculoskeletal medicine.
Awards & Honors:
- Best Biomedical Engineering Postgraduate Project Prize (IMechE)
- Biomechanics Award (ISTA)
- Engineering Leadership Advanced Award (Royal Academy of Engineering)
Professional Experience: Prior to joining Imperial, he spent a year at Renishaw designing their deep brain surgery robot system. He maintains affiliations with the Medical Engineering Centre (MSk MEC) and specializes in biomechanics and medical engineering applications.
