Dr. Richard J. O'Connor is a Professor of Oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (University at Buffalo) and holds adjunct roles in the School of Public Health and Health Professions. He leads the O'Connor Lab, focusing on tobacco regulatory science, product-user interactions, and policy impacts. His work includes directing the WNY Center for Research on Flavored Tobacco Products (CRoFT) and co-investigating the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project (ITC). He is a Senior Editor of Tobacco Control and has authored over 300 scientific papers.
Education: PhD in Biobehavioral Health from Pennsylvania State University and BA in Psychology from George Washington University. Honors include Fellow of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco.
Research interests span tobacco product design, policy evaluation, and risk perception. Notable projects include studying flavored tobacco products, filter ventilation in cigarettes, and vaping topography. His lab collaborates internationally on longitudinal studies and clinical trials, such as the Sensory Tests of Cigarettes for Identification of Flavors trial.
Lab team includes Kristie Kibby (Translational Research Scientist) and Brian Fix (Senior Research Specialist). Alumni include Destiny Diaz (PhD), Anushree Sharma (PhD), and others. Grants include NCI-funded Consortium on Methods for Evaluating Tobacco (COMET).
