Richard Hilliard

Richard Hilliard is a Professor of Graphic Design and Coordinator of the Illustration Minor at the School of Art, Design and Art History, James Madison University. With over 16 years of professional experience, he previously served as an art director/creative director for major advertising agencies and design firms, working with clients such as Warner Bros. Studios, Ford Motor Co., Universal Studios, DC Comics, Lucasfilm Ltd., Paramount Pictures, and Marvel Comics Publications. He actively contributes to campus life as a faculty advisor for the Madison Anime Association and the JMU Ultimate Frisbee Team, and holds committee roles on the Safety Committee and Judicial Council.

Research interests span graphic design methodologies, illustration techniques, and digital painting, with a focus on integrating creative storytelling into visual arts education. His work bridges academic and professional realms, emphasizing practical applications of design principles in advertising and media. Notable creative projects include children’s literature such as Neil, Buzz, and Mike Go to the Moon, which won the IRA Notable Children’s Award and was nominated for the James Madison Book Award, and explorations into historical trends like The Resurrection of Horror Comics in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Professional affiliations include membership in the New York Society of Illustrators. His advisory roles and committee work reflect a commitment to fostering student engagement and campus safety. He leads initiatives in the School of Art, Design and Art History to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in design education.
