معرفی
Richard Greatbatch is a Professor of Theoretical Oceanography at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (2012-2020) and an Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool (2017-2023). His work bridges ocean dynamics, climate modeling, and coupled atmosphere-ocean systems, with a focus on equatorial jets, ENSO dynamics, and decadal climate prediction. He has held prestigious positions including NSERC/MARTEC/EC Industrial Research Chair and coordinated atmospheric science initiatives at Dalhousie University.
Research interests include:
- Equatorial deep jets and their role in ocean circulation
- Climate variability and predictability across tropical-extratropical linkages
- Sea level dynamics and ENSO teleconnections
- Decadal climate prediction using ocean-atmosphere models
- Biogeochemical processes in oxygen minimum zones
Key article trends reveal a focus on tropical Atlantic dynamics, ENSO mechanisms, and seasonal-to-decadal climate prediction. His work spans numerical modeling of eddy fluxes, observational analysis, and interdisciplinary studies on marine deoxygenation.
Scientific Awards:
- 2020 Fridtjof Nansen Medal (EGU)
- Co-Editor of Ocean Dynamics and Journal of Oceanography
Greatbatch has contributed to major international collaborations, including the PREFACE and MiKlip projects, and mentored early-career researchers through editorial and advisory roles. His MODINI project pioneered techniques for improving climate model initialization using observed wind stress.
