Jochem Marotzke is a Professor at the University of Hamburg and serves as Director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg. He leads the Director's Research Group (CVR) within the Department of Climate Variability. His work focuses on climate variability, ocean dynamics, and decadal climate prediction.
Education: PhD in Physical Oceanography (University of Kiel, 1990), MSc in Physics (University of Kiel, 1985). Studies at Universities in Bonn, Copenhagen, and Kiel. Honorary Professor at the University of Hamburg since 2006.
Research Interests: Climate system interactions, Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), climate modeling, and socio-climatic dynamics. He pioneered the RAPID monitoring system for the AMOC and led the decadal climate prediction initiative MiKlip. Collaborates with Prof. Manfred Milinski on behavioral experiments for climate policy.
Grants/Awards: Fridtjof Nansen Medal (2009), Leopoldina Membership (2007), Victor P. Starr Career Development Professorship (MIT, 1993–1997). Co-leads the CLICCS cluster on climate-society interactions.
Teaching: Courses on Climate Dynamics and Generic Academic Skills at the University of Hamburg. Co-leads the IMPRS-ESM doctoral program, mentoring over 40 PhD students. Current advisees include Björn Mayer and María Jesús Rapanague Sepúlveda.
Labs/Teams: Head of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology’s climate modeling groups, including the ICON Earth System Model development team. Collaborates with the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ).
