Richard Gerraty is an Adjunct Professor of Neuroscience at Monash University and a stroke specialist at Epworth Hospital, where he served as the foundation professor of medicine. He leads research in stroke risk assessment, vestibular medicine (particularly acute vertigo), and telemedicine applications in stroke care. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health equity and well-being.
He is actively involved in the Victorian Stroke Telemedicine network and chairs committees such as Safer Care Victoria's Stroke Clinical Network. Gerraty holds roles on the board of the Brain Foundation (Victoria) and the Council of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of BMJ Open Neurology and participates in ethics committees at Alfred Health.
His research focuses on acute vertigo diagnostics using video-oculography and stroke prevention strategies. Key projects include the T3 Trial (improving stroke care in emergency departments) and the STANDFIRM trial (shared team approaches for risk factor management in stroke survivors). Over 80 publications span clinical trials, economic evaluations, and systematic reviews in stroke, vestibular disorders, and cardiovascular-neurological interactions.
Notable collaborations include work with National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Australia and Brain Foundation-funded projects. His recent articles highlight cost-effectiveness of post-stroke care programs and links between vestibular neuritis and atrial fibrillation.
