Richard G. Forbes is a Visiting Associate Professor at the School of Mathematics and Physics, University of Surrey. Formerly a Reader in High Electric Field Nanoscience, he retired in 2006 but remains active in research. His career includes roles at Trinity College, Cambridge; Aston University; and Surrey's Department of Electrical Engineering. He holds advanced degrees (MA, PhD, DSc) and prestigious fellowships, including Inaugural Fellow of the International Field Emission Society (IFES) and Fellowships of the Institute of Physics and Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Education: Trinity College, Cambridge (Natural Sciences Tripos, Physics; PhD in Field Ion Microscopy).
Research interests focus on high electric field nanoscience, field emission theory, quantum tunneling, density functional theory, and standardization in FE literature. He has contributed to nanotechnology education, outreach, and international standardization initiatives.
Key awards include IFES President roles, Russian Academy of Natural Sciences membership, and leadership in UK engineering education committees. His work bridges theoretical physics, applied electronics, and materials science, with over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
Recent research topics include DFT analysis of carbon nanotubes, FE theory modernization, and integrity of FE literature. Collaborations span Brazil, Russia, and international standards bodies. He advises on FE technological applications and contributes to atom probe tomography best practices.
