معرفی
Dr. Matt Cole is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath, where he leads research in vacuum nano-electronics and nanomaterial integration. He is Co-Director of the Centre for Integrated Materials, Processes & Structures (IMPS) and affiliated with the Centre for Biosensors, Bioelectronics & Biodevices and the Centre for Nanoscience & Nanotechnology.
His research focuses on the development and application of carbon nanotubes and graphene, particularly through chemical vapor deposition, for advanced electronic and optoelectronic devices. Key areas include field emission, flexible electronics, MEMS, and nanoengineered X-ray sources. His work bridges fundamental materials science with practical engineering applications in medical imaging, security, and display technologies.
The recent publications reflect a strong trend in engineering high-performance nanomaterial-based electron emitters, optimizing device architectures, enhancing material stability, and enabling scalable fabrication techniques. Themes include doping stability in graphene, simulation of nanotube arrays, mechanical robustness of flexible films, and novel polarizer and infrared emitter designs.
Dr. Cole has received numerous honors, including:
- Sir MacFarlane Medal (Royal Academy of Engineering)
- Sir Kroto Medal (NanoSmat Society)
- Silver Medal (Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining)
- Sir Royce Medal (Institute of Engineering & Technology)
- Forbes 30 Under 30 (2016)
- MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 (2017)
- Founders of the Future Forum (2016)
He has held prestigious fellowships such as the Isaac Newton Trust, Winston Churchill, and Oppenheimer Research Fellowships. He is also a Chartered Engineer, Physicist, and Scientist, and a Senior Member of IEEE. Dr. Cole is actively involved in STEM outreach and education. He co-founded Cambridge Xray Systems, a spin-out company commercializing field emission X-ray technology. His research group operates advanced fabrication and characterization facilities for vacuum nanoelectronics.
