Dr. Richard Fenner is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Sustainable Development within the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. As a Chartered Civil Engineer and Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, he specializes in water, sanitation, and sustainability, particularly focusing on challenges in developing countries. His current work explores resource interdependencies (water, land, energy) in sub-Saharan Africa using the Foreseer tool, while also advancing pit latrine sludge management and environmental impact assessments through Material Flow Analysis.
- Key projects include modifying the Foreseer tool for resource sector analysis in Uganda
- Supervising synthetic sludge characterization and desludging equipment performance studies
- Applying system dynamics to barriers in household water treatment in India, Nepal, and Ghana
He contributes to global health initiatives as a committee member of the Cambridge in Africa Programme and as the engineering representative on the Cambridge Africa Partnership in Research Excellence (CAPREx). His accolades from the Institution of Civil Engineers include the George Stephenson Gold Medal, R A Carr Prize, and James Watt Medal.
