Michael R. Templeton is a Professor of Public Health Engineering at Imperial College London's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, part of the Faculty of Engineering. He holds the Oxfam and Water For People / Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Global Sanitation Technology. His research addresses water supply, sanitation, and public health challenges in developing regions, with projects in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Benin, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, India, China, and Nepal.
Templeton earned a BEng (Honors) in Engineering Science and a PhD in Civil-Environmental Engineering from the University of Toronto. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and elected Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences. He advises the World Health Organization, Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health, UK Research and Innovation, and others.
His research focuses on sustainable sanitation technologies like the 'Tiger Toilet' (vermi-compost systems) and faecal sludge pyrolysis for resource recovery. Key interests include water treatment processes for schistosomiasis control, antibiotic resistance in water systems, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
