Dr. Richard Cook is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, affiliated with research groups such as the national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS) and the Institute for Life Sciences. His research focuses on biomaterials, biomechanics, and biotribology, with specialties in hydrogel testing for orthopaedic applications, dental tribology, and alloy development. He has over 15 years of experience in understanding structure-function interactions in biological and biomaterial systems.
- Research Groups: nCATS, Institute for Life Sciences, Interdisciplinary Musculoskeletal Health
His work spans diverse areas including the tribology of tooth brushing, efficacy testing for dental hypersensitivity, and high-resolution 3D imaging of calcified tissues. Recent projects include EU-funded initiatives like H2020-NMBP and H2020-APRICOT, focusing on advanced materials and their biomedical applications.
His publications highlight contributions to nanotoxicology, hydrogel mechanics, and alloy corrosion properties. He has advised two current PhD students in Engineering and the Environment. Dr. Cook is also an invited speaker, exemplified by his 2013 presentation at the Nanoindentation Day event.
