Richard Clark Stedman is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at Cornell University. He also serves as Associate Director of the Center for Conservation Social Sciences and is a member of the Graduate Field of Development Sociology. His academic career includes prior roles at The Pennsylvania State University (2002-2007) and the Canadian Forest Service.
Dr. Stedman holds a Ph.D. in Sociology/Rural Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2000), an M.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University (1993), and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1989).
His research focuses on social-ecological systems, emphasizing sense of place, environmental quality, and community well-being. Key areas include energy transitions (shale gas, renewables), wildlife management, and resource-dependent communities. Recent work explores solar energy development impacts and community adaptation strategies.
His 200+ publications reflect interdisciplinary engagement with energy policy, climate resilience, and cultural dimensions of environmental attitudes. Notable recent studies address public opposition to utility-scale solar, Latine environmental behaviors, and fisheries governance in Iceland.
