Richard Cavell is a Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Faculty of Arts. He is the Co-Founder of the Bachelor of Media Studies Program and a leading scholar in media theory, Canadian studies, and media anthropology. His work bridges media history with cultural studies, notably through publications on Marshall McLuhan and explorations of media’s role in modern culture.
Education: BA, MA from University of British Columbia; PhD from University of Toronto.
Research Interests: Media Theory, Marshall McLuhan, Italian Futurism, Cold War cultural politics, media anthropology, West Coast modern architecture, and sexuality studies. Recent publications include The Explorations of Edmund Snow Carpenter: Anthropology Upside Down (2024), which won the McLuhan Award, and McLuhan in Space (2002, upcoming Chinese translation).
Teaching: Regularly teaches ENGL 232 (Media Anthropology) and co-taught graduate courses on media and misinformation. Supervised doctoral work on lyric poetry evolution and sound ontology.
Initiatives: Founder of the Bachelor of Media Studies Program; founding member of Critical Studies in Sexuality Program, School of Journalism, and International Canadian Studies Centre.
Awards: 2024 McLuhan Award for Outstanding Book.
