معرفی
Richard Carmichael is a Research Fellow at Imperial College London's Centre for Environmental Policy (Faculty of Natural Sciences), where he co-leads the Behaviour Change in Energy and Environment Policy (BEEP) Research Network. He holds affiliate positions at the Energy Futures Lab, Grantham Institute, and Intelligent Systems and Networks group, while serving as a Clean Growth Leadership Network Fellow and member of the British Psychological Society's Climate and Environmental Crisis Steering Group.
His educational background includes:
- MA Hons (First Class) in Psychology (University of Dundee)
- MSc (Distinction) in Critical Social Psychology (Lancaster University)
- PG Cert (Distinction) in Coaching Psychology (University of East London)
- PhD in Social Psychology (Loughborough University, 2002)
Dr. Carmichael's research centers on action-oriented behaviour change for Net Zero transition, with expertise spanning energy systems (heat pumps, EVs, demand response), sustainable diets, and data-driven digital tools. His work emphasizes peer-to-peer learning mechanisms, co-benefits tracking, and positive feedback loops to drive high-impact shifts in household behaviour across transport, heating, and food systems. Recent projects focus on real-world heat pump performance measurement and smart tariff engagement through open-source digital platforms.
Analysis of his publication record reveals a strong trajectory toward policy-implementation research, with increasing emphasis on measurable real-world impacts of behaviour change interventions. His work bridges psychological theory with engineering systems, particularly in demand-side flexibility and consumer-facing climate solutions, while maintaining consistent focus on equity dimensions of the energy transition.
Scientific recognition includes:
- FRSA (Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts)
- Clean Growth Leadership Network Fellowship
His grant portfolio demonstrates significant government engagement, including UKERC Flexible Fund projects (Win-Window: Tracking co-benefits), BEIS-funded initiatives (Smarter Tariffs, Heat Pump Ready Programme), and Climate Change Committee contributions. As Proposer/Co-Investigator on multiple interdisciplinary projects with Energy Systems Catapult and Ofgem, he specializes in translating behavioural insights into operational policy frameworks through trials like the Low Carbon London dynamic pricing experiment.
Within Imperial College, he actively shapes the BEEP Research Network's agenda while contributing to Energy Futures Lab and Grantham Institute initiatives, particularly through briefing papers presented to Parliament and regulators on heat pump transitions and fair Net Zero financing.
