Professor Richard Butler is a vertebrate palaeontologist at the University of Birmingham, holding the title of Professor of Palaeobiology and serving as Director of Research for the College of Life & Environmental Sciences. He leads the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences and oversees research strategy across multiple disciplines. Butler completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge (2007) and BSc at the University of Bristol (2002).
His research focuses on reptile systematics, Mesozoic biodiversity patterns, and dinosaur evolution post-Permo-Triassic mass extinction. Key areas include tetrapod diversification, fossil record quality, and the environmental drivers of evolutionary radiations. He supervises advanced palaeontology projects and contributes to field and museum skills training.
Butler has held roles such as Academic Keeper of the Lapworth Museum of Geology and led initiatives like the Symposium on Vertebrate Palaeontology and Comparative Anatomy (SVPCA). His recent publications address dinosaur track site valuation, Cretaceous sauropod remains in Serbia, and pterosaur locomotion insights.
He chairs editorial boards for journals like Journal of Systematic Palaeontology and advises institutions globally. Butler’s work bridges academic leadership, museum curation, and international collaboration in advancing palaeobiological understanding.
