Espen Knutsen is a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University (JCU) and Senior Scientist/Curator of Palaeontology at the Queensland Museum in Townsville. His research focuses on Mesozoic reptiles, particularly their diversity, evolution, and ecology across the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Current projects involve fieldwork in Australia to study vertebrate fauna in the southern hemisphere, including Triassic ecosystems, Cretaceous marine reptiles, and micro-vertebrate fossils in Queensland.
Knutsen collaborates widely, with co-authored publications in journals like Gondwana Research and Basin Research. His work spans stratigraphy, paleogeography, and taxonomic revisions of marine reptiles. He advises students pursuing Honours or Masters projects in vertebrate palaeontology, offering topics such as Triassic trace fossils and Cretaceous marine reptiles.
Notable contributions include reconstructing Jurassic paleoenvironments in eastern Gondwana and re-evaluating contentious fossils like the 'last dicynodont.' His fieldwork in Spitsbergen and Australia has led to descriptions of new plesiosaur species and insights into Arctic lagerstätten formations.
