Richard Buchanan is a Professor in the Department of Design & Innovation at Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University, and Chair Professor of Design Theory, Practice, and Entrepreneurship at Tongji University. He also serves as co-editor of Design Issues, the leading journal in design history and theory.
- Education: AB and PhD from the Committee on the Analysis of Ideas and the Study of Methods at the University of Chicago.
- Roles: Former head of the School of Design and director of doctoral studies at Carnegie Mellon University (1980s–2008).
His research focuses on interaction design, service design, and organizational design, extending design principles to systems, social life, and management. He pioneered the concept of four orders of design and advocates for Design for Wicked Problems and Manage by Designing.
Recent publications explore systems thinking, design ethics, and design’s role in public sector reform. His keynote addresses at institutions like Stanford and Princeton highlight the intersection of design, law, and innovation. Awards include an honorary doctorate from the University of Montréal (2009). As an editor and former president of the Design Research Society, he has shaped global discourse on design theory and criticism.
