Richard Brettell

Richard Brettell was the Margaret M. McDermott Distinguished Chair of Art and Aesthetic Studies and Edith O'Donnell Distinguished Chair at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas). He served as Vice Provost and Director of the Edith ODonnell Institute of Art History. His academic roles included Professorships at Harvard University and Yale University, alongside appointments as Visiting Scholar at The Clark Art Institute and American Director of FRAME (French Regional & American Museum Exchange).

Education: Brettell earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in History of Art from Yale University (1971, 1973, 1977).

Research Interests: Brettell specialized in 19th- and 20th-century visual representation, art museums in capitalist societies, visual translation of texts, and architectural history. His work emphasized Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the intersection of art with ecology, private collecting, and cultural identity.

Awards: He received France’s highest cultural honor, the Commandeur certificate from the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters), recognizing his contributions to art history and museum studies.

Grants & Exhibitions: Brettell curated major exhibitions like Pissarro’s People (2010), Monet in Normandy (2007), and Gauguin and Impressionism (2005–2006). He authored/co-authored catalogs for these exhibitions and served as a museum consultant for institutions such as the Dallas Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Labs/Teams: He founded the Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Museums at UT Dallas in 1998, emphasizing museum studies and art historiography.
