Richard Brachman is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Queen's University, affiliated with Smith Engineering. He serves as Research Director at the GeoEngineering Centre and as Research Faculty at the Beaty Water Research Centre. He is also an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Geotextiles and Geomembranes.
Education:
- PhD (1999) in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, University of Western Ontario
- B.E.Sc (1993) in Civil Engineering, University of Western Ontario
Research focuses on buried infrastructure performance: measuring physical responses of landfill geosynthetics (geomembranes, geosynthetic clay liners) and buried structures (pipes, culverts) using large-scale experiments, field data, and numerical modeling. Key topics include stress-temperature-chemical-time effects on soil-structure interactions, critical for infrastructure longevity.
Awards highlight impactful contributions across geotechnical engineering and teaching. His work bridges laboratory innovation with real-world environmental and infrastructure challenges.
