Richard Billingham is Professor of Creative Industries at Middlesex University, working across photography, film direction, and video installation. His influential 'Ray's a Laugh' photobook series documenting family life received the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize, while his BAFTA-nominated film 'Ray & Liz' earned international acclaim. Billingham's practice explores themes of marginalization, landscape, and domestic environments.
Recent works include the 2024 republication of 'Ray's a Laugh' and solo exhibition 'We Ran Together' exploring Welsh landscapes. His research examines how visual media represents social realities and environmental contexts. Billingham has exhibited internationally at venues including Venice Biennale and MoMA, with over 40 solo exhibitions and 200 group shows.
His artistic practice integrates documentary traditions with experimental approaches to representing place and social experience. Current projects include developing a feature film adaptation of 'At Hawthorn Time' with BFI support.
