Richard Baldwin

Richard Baldwin is Professor of International Economics at IMD Business School in Lausanne, Editor-in-Chief of VoxEU.org (which he founded in 2007), and Non-Resident Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Previously, he served as President of CEPR (2016-2019), held visiting professorships at Oxford, Adelaide, and MIT, and was a professor at the Graduate Institute in Geneva and Columbia Business School.

His research focuses on international trade, globalization, regionalism, and European integration. Baldwin's influential books include The Great Convergence (2016), listed by Larry Summers as one of the five most important globalization books ever, and The Globotics Upheaval (2019). His recent work analyzes Trump-era trade policies, tariff impacts, and the intersection of globalization with service-sector automation.

Baldwin's publications reveal consistent focus on trade policy evolution, supply chain dynamics, and political economy of globalization. His 2021-2025 research particularly examines tariff impacts, US-China trade relations, and the 'globotics' revolution where telecommuting and AI disrupt service sectors.

Baldwin earned his PhD at MIT under Paul Krugman (with whom he co-authored multiple papers), MSc from LSE, and BA from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as Senior Staff Economist for the President's Council of Economic Advisors during the Bush Administration (1990-1991), participating in Uruguay Round negotiations, NAFTA, and US-Japan trade disputes. He has held leadership roles including Elected Member of European Economic Association Council (1999-2004, 2006-2011) and Vice Chair of PIIE Academic Advisory Committee (2008-2012).
