Richard Appiah is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Northumbria University, specializing in applied health, positive, and clinical psychology. His research focuses on designing mental health interventions to promote resilience and well-being, with a particular emphasis on culturally sensitive approaches in African contexts. He holds a PhD in Health Sciences from North-West University, South Africa, and completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University's Center for African Studies (2021-2023). Dr. Appiah has secured grants from institutions like DFID, NIHSS, and the LEGO Foundation, and serves as a Review Editor for Frontiers in Psychology and Psychiatry.
His educational background includes a master’s in clinical psychology from the University of Ghana. Before academia, he worked as a clinical psychologist, co-developing mental health interventions for rural Ghana through partnerships with Innovations for Poverty Action and Heifer Ghana. His research spans ethics in cross-cultural research, culturally adapted mental health assessments, and participatory action methodologies.
