Richard A. Williams is the Principal & Vice-Chancellor at Heriot-Watt University, holding the academic rank of Professor. He has an extensive career in academia and industry, previously serving as a Professor of Minerals Engineering at the University of Exeter and University of Leeds, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Birmingham. His research focuses on energy storage, mineral resources, nuclear waste management, and particle science. He has over 400 scientific publications and numerous patents.
Williams holds a BSc (Eng) in Mineral Technology from Imperial College London (1983) and a PhD (1995). He has led major initiatives, including the Leeds Nanomanufacturing Institute and the Institute of Particle Science and Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and has received prestigious awards like the OBE for services to science and engineering.
His editorial roles include serving on the boards of journals like Minerals Engineering and Particuology. He has collaborated internationally, fostering partnerships in Europe, Asia, and Africa. His work aligns with UN SDGs, particularly in sustainable energy and resource management.
