Richard A Gibbs is the Wofford Cain Chair and Professor in Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). He serves as Director of the Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) and holds professorial roles in multiple programs including the Program in Translational Biology & Molecular Medicine and the Program in Integrative Molecular and Biomedical Sciences. His research focuses on genome science, human molecular evolution, and inherited disease mechanisms.
Education: BS and PhD from the University of Melbourne (1978-1986), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at BCM. Notable accolades include election to the Institute of Medicine (2011), the Michael E. DeBakey Excellence in Research Award (2000), and leadership in major genomic initiatives like the Human Genome Project.
The HGSC under his direction pioneered whole exome sequencing, published the first diploid human genome (James Watson), and advanced clinical genomic applications. Current work includes cardiovascular genetic risk screening and participation in the national All of Us consortium. Key projects involve bioinformatics tool development and systematic discovery of genetic disease causes.
- Awards: Institute of Medicine Membership, LSU Chancellor's Lectureship, Multiple Research Fellowships
- Leadership: HGSC Director since 1996, overseeing 180+ staff and 18 faculty
- Clinical Impact: Pioneered genomic diagnostics for Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy and Xia-Gibbs syndrome
