Professor Rich Kerswell is a faculty member in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge since 2017. Previously, he held positions at the University of Bristol (1996-2017) and Newcastle University (1992-1996), following his PhD from MIT (1992). His research focuses on general fluid mechanics, including the Navier-Stokes equations, nonlinear dynamics, turbulence transition, and geophysical/astrophysical fluid mechanics (e.g., convection, stratified flows, planetary interiors). He explores phenomena such as tidal and precessional motions, accretion disks, and the interplay between elasticity and inertia in complex fluids.
Recent work emphasizes fluid instabilities in viscoelastic flows, polymer solutions, and stratified systems, leveraging machine learning techniques like autoencoders and neural networks to analyze turbulence and coherent structures. His contributions include studies on boundary condition optimization, burst event prediction, and the polymer diffusive instability in high-concentration fluids.
