Colm-Cille Patrick Caulfield is a Professor of Environmental and Industrial Fluid Dynamics at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the BP Institute and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP). He has served as Head of DAMTP since 2020 and is a Fellow and College Lecturer in Mathematics at Churchill College, Cambridge. His career includes roles as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto (1992–1994), Assistant/Associate Professor at UC San Diego (1999–2005), and Visiting Researcher at École Polytechnique-CNRS (2004–2005).
His research focuses on stratified flows, turbulent mixing processes, flow instabilities, and geophysical fluid dynamics, with applications to environmental and industrial systems. Key contributions include studies on oceanic mixing, turbulent energy dissipation, and shear-driven instabilities. He leads research groups in the Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information and the High-Reynolds-Number Fluid Flow group.
Recent work explores layered anisotropic turbulence, Prandtl number effects on mixing, and data-driven modeling of stratified flows. His publications in Journal of Fluid Mechanics and Geophysical Research Letters highlight interdisciplinary approaches to understanding fluid dynamics challenges in environmental and engineering contexts.
