Julien Landel is a Senior Lecturer (tenured Associate Professor) in Applied Mathematics at the University of Manchester's Department of Mathematics, and a member of the Manchester Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics. His research focuses on fluid mechanics and mathematical modeling, addressing industrial and environmental challenges such as cleaning/decontamination processes, superhydrophobic surfaces for drag reduction, and surfactant dynamics in confined geometries. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where he specialized in turbulent jets under Professors Colm Caulfield and Andy Woods.
Education: PhD in Applied Mathematics (University of Cambridge, 2013), MEng (National University of Singapore, 2009), and BSc/MSc from École polytechnique (Paris). Previous roles include Nevile Research Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge (2013–2016), and Post-Doctoral Research Associate at DAMTP, Cambridge (2012–2016).
Research interests include turbulent flows, multiphase plumes, and industrial collaborations with companies like BP and Dstl. His work bridges fluid mechanics with practical applications, such as optimizing decontamination processes and reducing energy consumption in maritime transport.
Key projects involve modeling convective mass transfer in cleaning systems, surfactant effects on superhydrophobic surfaces, and dispersion in turbulent jets. He actively supervises PhD students and leads interdisciplinary teams exploring fluid dynamics across scales, from microscopic surfactant interactions to large-scale environmental flows.
