Riccardo Rosati

Riccardo Rosati is a Full Professor of General Surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and Director of the School of Specialization in General Surgery. He serves as Head of the Gastroenterological Surgery and Week Surgery Unit at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. His extensive academic career includes previous appointments as Associate Professor of General Surgery at the University of Milan (2006-2014) and Founder/Director of the CURE Center for Esophagogastric Diseases Research and Treatment at the University of Milan (2009-2014).

Professor Rosati earned his Medical Degree from the University of Milan in 1980 (110 cum laude), followed by specialization in General Surgery (1985) and Thoracopulmonary Surgery (1988). His professional journey began at the Institute of Clinical Surgery I of the University of Milan, progressing through various roles before becoming Head of the General and Minimally Invasive Surgery Unit at Humanitas Clinical Institute (1996-2014).

Rosati's clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of digestive system surgery, with particular focus on esophageal and gastric pathology, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and colorectal conditions. He has extensive experience in minimally invasive approaches for both malignant and benign conditions, including bariatric surgery (gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy) and endocrine surgery (adrenal, thyroid, and parathyroid procedures). His work has significantly advanced gastrointestinal oncology surgery at San Raffaele Hospital, establishing it as Italy's leading center for esophageal surgery since 2015 according to AGENAS PNE data.

His extensive publication record includes over 300 scientific articles, with recent research focusing on colorectal carcinoma, esophageal carcinoma, stomach cancer, and various aspects of surgical techniques including minimally invasive approaches, HIPEC for gastric cancer, and immunonutrition protocols. His work demonstrates a strong commitment to improving surgical outcomes through evidence-based practices and technological innovation.

Professor Rosati has organized and developed emergency surgery and day surgery programs at both Humanitas Clinical Institute and San Raffaele Hospital, introducing outpatient laparoscopic procedures like cholecystectomy and abdominal wall repair in Italy. He directs units that have treated over 25,000 surgical patients since 1996, with significant advancements in gastrointestinal oncology surgery since his appointment at San Raffaele in 2014.

His research centers include the CERCA e riCERCA multidisciplinary center for upper digestive tract diseases diagnosis, treatment, and research, which he directs at San Raffaele University. He has organized numerous specialized training courses for surgeons both nationally and internationally, contributing significantly to surgical education and knowledge dissemination in his field.
