Stefano Olmi

Professor Stefano Olmi is an Associate Professor of General Surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, Italy. He serves as Head of the Department of General and Oncologic Surgery, Centre of Laparoscopic and Mini-invasive Surgery, and Centre of Bariatric Surgery at Policlinico San Marco in Zingonia. With over 25 years of surgical experience, Professor Olmi has performed more than 10,000 laparoscopic and open surgical procedures, specializing in complex gastrointestinal and bariatric surgeries.

His educational background includes a Medical Degree with honors from the University of Milan in 1995, followed by specialization in Emergency Surgery with honors in 2000. Professor Olmi has held various academic and clinical positions, progressing from surgical intern to his current role as Associate Professor. He obtained national academic qualification as Associate Professor in 2013 and as Full Professor in 2022.

Professor Olmi's research focuses on tumor immunology, translational research in surgical oncology, and the development of laparoscopic technologies and devices. His clinical expertise spans multiple areas including colorectal surgery, bariatric and metabolic surgery, gastric cancer surgery, and abdominal wall hernia repair. He has pioneered numerous laparoscopic techniques for complex procedures including pancreaticoduodenectomy and gastric resections.

His extensive publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly in the treatment of obesity, gastroesophageal reflux, and abdominal wall hernias. Professor Olmi's recent work has also addressed surgical challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to the development of safe protocols for continuing essential surgical care.

As an educator, Professor Olmi has served as a tutor and lecturer for surgical residents since 1995. He has coordinated national courses in advanced laparoscopic surgery and has been instrumental in training surgeons from Italy and abroad. His department serves as a European benchmark for abdominal wall pathology treatment and is recognized as a center of excellence for laparoscopic treatment of colorectal, esophageal-gastric, and pancreatic diseases.

Professor Olmi leads a research team focused on tumor immunology and the development of new surgical techniques and materials. His department performs over 2,000 surgical procedures annually, with more than 90% using laparoscopic approaches. The center has recently been recognized as a National Center of Excellence for obesity care and surgical treatment, performing nearly 1,000 procedures annually.
