Rhodri Lewis is a Professor of English and Senior Research Scholar at Princeton University, having transitioned from the University of Oxford where he served as a full professor, Head of Graduate Studies in Humanities, and Director of Ertegun House. His research focuses on early modern literary and intellectual history, with particular expertise in Shakespearean drama, Renaissance humanism, and the intersections of science, religion, and language. Lewis holds a 2025-26 Guggenheim Fellowship and has authored influential works such as *Hamlet and the Vision of Darkness* (2017) and *Shakespeare’s Tragic Art* (2024).
His academic journey includes over two decades at Oxford as a student, faculty member, and leader. He has received grants from the Mellon Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, and the British Academy. Current projects include a biography of literary critic Frank Kermode and a new edition of Francis Bacon’s *Wisdom of the Ancients*. Lewis reviews regularly for *The Times Literary Supplement*, *Prospect*, and others.
Research interests span drama theory, the history of science/religion, and early modern anthropological thought. His scholarship integrates close textual analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, exploring topics like the ontology of dramatic performance, the role of metaphor in tragedy, and the socio-historical contexts of early scientific inquiry.
Awards include the *Choice* Outstanding Academic Title (2018) and a *New Yorker* Book of the Year (2024). His teaching covers British literature from the Renaissance to the 18th century, emphasizing performance studies, poetry, and literary theory.
