Professor Rhiannon Purdie is the Head of School and holds the title of Professor of English and Older Scots at the School of English, University of St Andrews. She specializes in Older Scots literature, later Middle English literature, medieval romance, and textual editing. She serves as Editorial Secretary for the Scottish Text Society and co-edits Boydell & Brewer's 'Studies in Medieval Romance' series. Her research emphasizes making pre-1700 Scots literature accessible through initiatives like 'Read Older Scots' (https://readolderscots.scot/).
Educated at the University of St Andrews (MA, 1990) and the University of Bristol (PhD, 1997), her academic accolades include a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship (2021-23) and a Fulbright Fellowship (2016). She has supervised PhD theses focusing on topics such as Arthurian legend, Middle English romance, and women's literary engagement in pre-modern Scotland.
Her research interests span textual editing, medieval Scottish and English literature, and the intersection of literature with historical and cultural contexts. She has published widely, including scholarly editions of medieval texts and articles analyzing medieval manuscripts, historiography, and genre evolution.
Professor Purdie is actively involved in academic leadership, serving as outgoing Chair of the Scottish Medievalists until January 2025. Her work contributes to preserving and interpreting pre-modern literary heritage while fostering interdisciplinary dialogue in medieval studies.
