Rhaisa Williams is Assistant Professor of Theater at Princeton University's Lewis Center for the Arts. Her research employs interdisciplinary methodologies to examine intersections of Blackness, motherhood, affect, and disquieting freedom practices. She utilizes archival materials, family histories, and cultural analysis to investigate how Black women mobilize maternal grief as political expression and citizenship critique.
Her forthcoming manuscript, Mama, Don't You Weep: Motherhood, Blackness, and Performances of Grief, traces grief performances from the civil rights movement to contemporary activism. Dr. Williams' work illuminates how Black mothers transform personal loss into collective political action, challenging conventional narratives of citizenship. Her research extends to visual culture analyses of Black family photography and community rituals in urban nightlife spaces.
