Professor Reuben Tooze is a Clinical Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds, leading research on B-cell malignancies while holding an honorary consultant appointment at the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS) of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust since 2003.
His educational qualifications include:
- MBBS from St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, University of London
- PhD in Immunology under Prof Douglas T. Fearon, FRS
Professor Tooze's research centers on molecular mechanisms of B-cell differentiation into plasma cells and plasma cell lifespan regulation, with emphasis on transcriptional control in post-germinal centre B-cell lymphomas and plasma cell neoplasms. His work integrates model systems development and bioinformatics to identify diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic approaches for lymphoma and myeloma.
His scientific awards include:
- MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship
- Cancer Research UK Senior Clinical Fellowship
He actively supervises postgraduate researchers including Nicole McDermott, Emily Robinson, and Kieran walker, with research funded by a 2014 CRUK programme grant investigating plasma cell myeloma origins and previous competitive fellowships. He also served as Director of the former Cancer Research UK Leeds Centre.
Professor Tooze leads a team within the Leeds Institute of Medical Research at St James's, maintaining critical collaborations with Prof David Westhead's bioinformatics laboratory (notably Dr Matthew Care's novel approaches) and clinical networks at HMDS and the Haematological Malignancy Research Network (HMRN).
