Reto Hofmann is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Curtin University's Faculty of Science and Engineering. He specializes in modern Japanese history and international history, focusing on fascism, empire, transwar dynamics, and neoliberalism. His current research project explores a global history of neoliberalism centered in Japan. Hofmann holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Western Australia and a PhD from Columbia University. He has taught at institutions including the University of Western Australia, Waseda University, and Monash University.
His research examines the impact of prewar Japanese conservatism on post-1945 political and cultural milieus, as documented in his book *The Fascist Effect: Japan and Italy, 1915–1952* (Cornell, 2015). Key publications include works on transwar Asia, anti-communism, and fascist interactions. Hofmann's scholarship bridges transnational and comparative approaches, emphasizing ideological networks and institutional continuities.
He has received the Gerda Henkel Scholarship for his ongoing book project *Out of Empire: The Japanese Right and the Making of the Postwar Order, 1920–1980*. Collaborative work includes co-editing *Transwar Asia: Ideology, Practices, and Institutions* (Bloomsbury, 2022). His research spans Japanese political figures, fascist imperialism, and neoliberal culturalism, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary historical analysis.
