- PhD from University of St Andrews, Scotland
- Bachelor of Arts (Honours I) from University of New South Wales, Australia
Professor Jeffery's research centers on transitional justice and human rights in the Indo-Pacific, with extensive fieldwork across Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Indonesia (including Aceh), Papua New Guinea (Bougainville), Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Japan, Philippines, and Taiwan. Her work examines truth and reconciliation commissions, human rights commissions, and commissions of inquiry as mechanisms for addressing past human rights violations. She also explores the intersection of emotions and international ethics, and the role of arts in transitional justice processes.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on national human rights institutions across Asia, with significant attention to Nepal, India, and the Maldives. The research demonstrates progression from theoretical explorations of emotions in international relations to increasingly applied studies of specific transitional justice contexts, particularly examining how accountability mechanisms function in complex political environments.
Professor Jeffery has received significant recognition for her scholarship:
- Australian Research Council Future Fellowship (2020-2025)
- Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia
- Global Fellow of Ewha Womans University (2023)
- Boyer Prize for Best article in Australian Journal of International Affairs (2015)
She has secured substantial research funding, including five Australian Research Council grants since 2009 totaling over $1.5 million, with her current ARC Future Fellowship project 'National Human Rights Institutions and Transitional Justice in Asia' representing a major contribution to the field. Professor Jeffery actively mentors doctoral students working on transitional justice and human rights issues across the Asia-Pacific region while completing her forthcoming book 'Unity and Prosperity: Human Rights in Australia's Foreign Affairs' and a manuscript on national human rights institutions in transitional justice processes.
