Professor Renata Tyszczuk is Head of the School of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Sheffield, where she holds the Chair in Architectural Humanities. She is a leading researcher exploring the relationship between global environmental change and architectural thinking and practice, with a particular focus on the Anthropocene and climate change.
Her educational background includes a BA in Architecture (1989), Dip Arch (1992), MPhil in History and Philosophy of Architecture (1994), and PhD (1998), all from the University of Cambridge.
Professor Tyszczuk's research interests span the cultural dimensions of climate change, provisional cities in the Anthropocene, and scenarios for climate futures. Her work bridges architectural humanities, environmental studies, and cultural theory to address the complex challenges of global environmental change. She approaches architecture as a provisional practice that must adapt to the uncertainties of the Anthropocene, exploring how architectural thinking can respond to environmental crises through experimental practices and cultural engagement. Her research demonstrates increasing integration of humanities perspectives with climate science and policy, particularly through her Culture and Climate Change initiative which connects artistic practice with climate research.
Her publications reveal a trajectory from historical investigations of architectural representation to contemporary concerns with climate change. Recent work focuses on "scenarios" as tools for imagining climate futures, examining how different disciplines construct narratives about environmental change. Her research demonstrates an increasing integration of humanities perspectives with climate science and policy, particularly through her Culture and Climate Change initiative which connects artistic practice with climate research.
- Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship (2019-2022) for "Collective Scenarios: rehearsing, predicting and speculating on climate futures"
- British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship for research on Provisional Cities
- Stroud Award from the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain
Professor Tyszczuk has supervised numerous PhD students whose research explores architecture's relationship with climate change, urban resilience, and cultural dimensions of environmental crises. Her major research grants include the AHRC-funded "Stories of Change" project (£1.47M), the Grantham Centre's "Scenarios of Climate Change" research network, and the Jerwood Charitable Trust-funded "Climate Change in Residence: Future Scenarios" project. She currently leads the Leverhulme-funded "Collective Scenarios" project examining the cultural history of climate scenarios.
She convenes the Culture and Climate Change research program, which has produced multiple publications and public engagement initiatives. She also leads the Space, Cultures and Politics Research Group at Sheffield and previously directed the Design, Engagement and Practice Research Group. Her work frequently involves interdisciplinary collaborations with scientists, artists, and policymakers to address climate change through cultural and architectural lenses.
