Dr. Julia Udall is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the Sheffield Creative Industries Institute within the College of Social Sciences and Arts at Sheffield Hallam University. She leads the pan-European Life-centering Cultural Heritage Network (LICHEN) and is a director of the architectural collective Studio Polpo. Her roles include teaching at postgraduate levels, supervising doctoral students, and leading research initiatives focused on urban commoning, climate justice, and critical spatial practices. She holds a BArch from the Mackintosh School of Architecture, an MArch (Distinction) from the Sheffield School of Architecture, and a PhD in Architecture from the University of Sheffield (2016).
Her research explores transdisciplinary approaches to societal and ecological challenges, emphasizing feminist ethical frameworks and collaborative methodologies. Key areas include architectural activism, participatory design, and the co-creation of regenerative cultural landscapes. Udall is a Fellow of the Future Architecture Platform (2021) for her work on Sonic Acts of Noticing, a project exploring listening as a spatial practice. She has led impactful projects such as the High Street of Exchanges, exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale, and the ark-Sheffield initiative addressing climate justice through performance and dialogue.
Teaching highlights include designing cross-disciplinary programs like ‘Co-Dreaming Climates’ and leading the Snorkelling in Soil project, integrating citizen-science with architectural education. Her supervisory work focuses on eco-social architectures, commoning, and civic university practices. Udall collaborates widely, engaging communities, artists, and institutions to foster equitable and resilient urban futures.
