Rena Wood serves as Assistant Professor of Fiber Art at Tennessee Tech University's Appalachian Center for Craft, where she teaches traditional and contemporary fiber techniques. She additionally holds the position of winter coordinator for Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts' "Pentaculum" program in the Fiber studio, demonstrating her dual institutional commitment to craft education.
Wood earned her BFA in Fiber from the Kansas City Art Institute and completed her MFA at Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of Craft/Material Studies. Her educational background established a foundation that bridges traditional craft techniques with contemporary conceptual approaches.
Her artistic practice centers on memory exploration through fiber materials and textile processes. Working extensively with stitched surfaces and vintage textiles, Wood manipulates these materials to create forms that embody personal and collective memories. She intentionally repurposes historical textile materials, creating dialogue between past craftsmanship and contemporary artistic expression while maintaining respect for traditional craft processes.
Analysis of Wood's artistic output reveals a consistent thematic focus on memory representation through textile forms, with evolution from the deconstructive "Unwoven Series" (2009-2012) to more recent installations like "Weight of Memory" (2022). Her work demonstrates increasing scale and complexity while maintaining conceptual coherence around memory, textile topography, and material transformation.

As an educator, Wood emphasizes the connection between technical fiber processes and conceptual development. Her teaching philosophy integrates historical craft knowledge with contemporary artistic practice, preparing students to work within and beyond traditional fiber art boundaries. She has taught fiber art throughout the country, sharing both traditional processes and their contemporary variations.
Wood maintains an active studio practice alongside her academic responsibilities, with recent exhibitions including a showcase at Vanderbilt University's Sarratt Gallery (January-March 2023). Her ongoing residencies and exhibition schedule demonstrate her sustained engagement with the national fiber art community.
