Reinhard Johler is Professor of Empirical Cultural Studies and Scientific Director of the Institute for Danube Swabian History and Regional Studies at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. He joined the university in 2002 after previous positions at the University of Vienna and guest professorships at École Normale Supérieure (Paris) and Sapienza University of Rome. His educational background includes a Magisterium (1986) and Doctorate (1994) in European Ethnology from the University of Vienna, with supplementary studies in social anthropology at Cambridge and Milan.
Research Focus: Johler's work examines cultural transformation through ethnographic approaches, with emphasis on:
- Cultural hybridity in post-Habsburg societies
- Migration, displacement, and European integration
- War anthropology and conflict studies
- Cultural heritage in Southeastern Europe
- Disaster cultures and social resilience
Publications: His extensive scholarly output (30+ books, 150+ articles) demonstrates consistent focus on ethnographic methodologies applied to European cultural transitions. Recent works analyze multiculturalism in Istria, refugee integration, and the anthropology of wartime knowledge production. Publications frequently employ comparative frameworks spanning Alpine regions, the Danube basin, and Mediterranean Europe.
